Commissioned from Steiff as a one off by Grand Duke George Michailovich of Russia for his daughter Princess Xenia Georgievna. She took ALFONZO to England in 1914 on a visit to Buckingham Palace.
World War 1 started and she and ALFONZO never went back to Russia. It is thought her Nanny made the Cossack costume for ALFONZO.
She kept ALFONZO until her death in 1965. Princess Xenia's daughter Nancy Leeds Wynkoop inherited ALFONZO and she offered him for sale at Christies in 1989.
The publicity prompted Steiff's limited edition of ALFONZO in 1990. The original ALFONZO is on display in Denmark (Billund) close to Legoland. Very fitting as Princess Xenia's mother was from the Danish Royal Family!
